How to choose a used Passat

The Passat has been through several generations and the designations B7, B8 and the newer versions cause the most confusion. These six steps will help you.

  • Generations B7, B8, ninth

    According to Volkswagen the Passat B7 was discontinued in February 2015 and replaced by the B8; Volkswagen announced the extensively updated Passat in 2019, and the ninth generation was presented on 31 August 2023. Check the generation by the VIN and technical data; the date of first registration is only a rough guide.

  • Passat, Passat Variant and CC

    The Variant and the Passat CC are listed in the catalogue as separate models. This page belongs to cars listed as the Passat; you can find the Variant through the link among the related models, if it is on offer.

  • Drive and engine

    For the ninth generation Volkswagen lists TDI, TDI 4MOTION, the eTSI mild hybrid and the eHybrid plug-in hybrid. For older cars check the drive and output in the detail.

  • Plug-in hybrid

    Electric range depends on the version, the methodology and the time the figure was published. For the ninth generation Volkswagen stated around 100 km in 2023 and up to 120 km in March 2024, in neither case naming the WLTP cycle; check a specific car in its technical data.

  • Gearbox and 4MOTION

    You will find the gearbox type and all-wheel drive in the car’s detail. For the ninth generation Volkswagen lists 4MOTION for the 142 kW TDI; do not assume it for other versions.

  • VIN, documents and inspection

    Before you visit, ask for the service records and documents and compare the VIN with them. If you are choosing between several Passat versions, book a test drive for available cars in the detail; if you cannot come in person, the salesperson can show you the car live.

Volkswagen states that the Passat is generally offered as a Variant. At the premiere (31 Aug 2023) it gave the plug-in hybrid range as around 100 km without a cycle; figures from different years and methodologies are not interchangeable.

How do I check which generation of Passat is on offer?

Does the Passat have all-wheel drive?

It depends on the version. For the ninth generation Volkswagen lists all-wheel drive as standard for the TDI 4MOTION 142 kW version; for other versions and older generations check it in the car’s detail.

Can I finance a used Passat, and what warranty applies?
